About

Retorra is a word from Latin which translates to yarn. When owner Ryan Reitmeyer conceived of his rug studio he wanted to create a company that would focus on crafting rugs from the best possible materials. The name Retorra serves as a constant reminder that in order to make a quality carpet you must use the choicest raw materials, you must obey the yarn. Reitmeyer believes that only with the best materials can you make a carpet that is truly worth walking on.

Ryan Reitmeyer studied carpets at the Bard Graduate Center in New York, where he earned his masters degree in the history of Decorative Arts. Much of his studio work was completed abroad where he studied textile design at the Danish Design School in Copenhagen DK. After school Reitmeyer cut his teeth at some of the most prestigious rug design houses in New York, but as a native Houstonian he always wanted to return and set up his own shop. After working for years with some of the best Interior Designers and Architects in the region Reitmeyer knew it was time to strike out on his own.

Interior Designers and Architects who visit Retorra will experience a clean, edited, light-filled space exhibiting samples which have been made using a variety of weaves, fibers, and designs. The in stock selections are from Reitmeyer’s original designs along with a selection of rugs by German rug designer Jan Kath and one-of-a-kind vintage selections. Walking into Retorra evokes fresh ideas to spark a collaboration between Reitmeyer and the designer where a new and completely original carpet can be created for the perfect interior project.
